Business Challenge

Mondi's Uncoated Fine Papers business was complex with a diverse range of products, distributed multi-stage manufacturing and a complex global market. There were many product mix options across multiple manufacturing sites and the goal was to generate a maximum profit supply and demand plan with detailed production schedules for each production and finishing line that delivered against target customer service levels at minimum cost.

Business Benefits

  • Forecast collaboration across all sales offices to create an accurate demand plan
  • A demand / supply balance maximising profitability
  • Least cost production schedules accurately aligned with demand
  • Improved inventory performance resulting in increased service level and reduced cost

The I-Plan Solution

I-Plan Supply and Demand Planning were the basis of the solution with collaborative forecasting driving the supply network optimisation model. Solving the problem involved optimising many 10’s of thousands of constraints and variables across multi-time periods, allowing the business to model alternative scenarios and ultimately release the agreed solution to fine planning and trim optimisation tools from Greycon for real time execution. The solution utilised the following I-Plan modules:-

I-Plan Demand

I-Plan Supply

I-Plan Production

I-Plan Inventory

Supply Chain Standard magazine has announced that Mondi Business Paper has won the European Supply Chain Excellence Award 2008 in the Aerospace, Defence and Industrial category.  Mondi also came second overall.   In a category dominated by high scoring German companies, Mondi was considered by the judges to be the only company that demonstrated it had a truly end-to-end solution. The company has successfully completed a supply chain transformation, starting with a new and well-devised supply chain strategy.

“What they have done that is really innovative for their sector is that they have defined customers more deeply.  For example, they do collaborative planning with certain business partners, which has meant that they have had to improve their own forecasting and planning,”  say the Judges.
